Subject: a complicated question...
with a simple answer...
Because if there was nothing we would not exist to debate it. The universe seems fine-tuned for life to exist because if it were not then we wouldn't be here.

reference to antimatter in previous posts; matter and antimatter are created at the same time and in the same way, antimatter is slightly denser than matter, however even this doesn't explain the abundance of matter in comparison to antimatter... scientists are frankly stumped on this matter (no pun intended).

reference to the "god particle" (higgs boson) this particle supposedly gives all other particles their mass, it has never been "seen" in laboratory tests however theoretically it could (and should) still exist. If not we need to think of a better idea.

reference to the big bang, this happened in much the same way as all matter in the universe is still created to this day, a slight ripple in space time causes matter to pop into existance randomly (google search Boltzmann brain theory for more info).

To go into a more complicated answer...
Life will always find a way, scientists have managed to cultivate living bacteria in substances usually considered sterile.
Regardless of the prevailing laws of physics in any given universe there will always be some kind of balance where something exists, and because of this life can begin and evolve almost anywhere and in almost any way.
God is not needed to facilitate this, however God is also not completely ruled out, even evolutionary theory allows for a God or similar being to be the one who planted the seeds of life on our planet (think about it, if you were a god would you create a single "master race" and thousands of life forms to feed it, or would you create a single cell capable of adapting, evolving and reproducing without your influence?).
