Subject: mass mail deletion?

i've just noticed that i appear to have lost a lot of mail... many of which were important to me. has anyone else had mail deleted that they didn't voluntarily do? if so, does anybody know why? i have random mail left, some from a few days ago and some from this time last year but none from a couple of months back.
