| It is the United States of America XD What you are hinting at is the distinction I have made between America the country and 'the Americas' meaning North and South America. Because of this Americans get their name for two reasons, living in the United States of America, and living in the Americas. That two fold naming is why residents of the United States are reffered to as Americans where as other people from the Americas are not, or if they are there is some kind of qualification like as you say, Latain Americans. Really I think defining a group of people by which contient they live on is a bit much because in each one there is a wide range of people. Really you could make the same argument about reffering to people from Africa or Europe or Asia in the same way. Referring to peoples by country is more specific, although still runs into problems with places like here in Canada where there are multiple cultures within the same country... still a Canadian citizen is still a Canadian AND someone who lives in the Americas |
