Subject: Beginner protection doesn't keep people from makings mistake | |||||
it just keeps them from feeling the consequences of those mistakes. Personally, I think anybody that can be run off by the first sign of adversity, should be run off. Because, honestly, everybody's going to hit adversity eventually, and if you're not prepared to deal with it you're just going to be an annoyance to everybody. Another basic fact that I think has gotten lost in this debate is: A substantial portion of the people who sign up for accounts will quit within a week or two no matter what. This is a simple consequence of the fact that it's very difficult if not impossible to find a good review or description of most online games from outside the game. So, most people who sign up don't know what they're getting into and actually signed up just to find out if the game was any fun or not. Some of those people will find out that the game isn't for them and be jerks about leaving and post something nasty on the way out that boils down to "I don't like it, so it must suck." I don't see much of a need to keep the jerks around or try to cater to them. And even the people who leave without being jerks are mostly doing it because the game just isn't for them. The only real way to keep them is to fundamentally change the game. Which would presumably result in something that doesn't appeal to the people that are already here. |
